Back to basics: all the tools you need.

I’m known for talking a lot about vocal technique basics.

They are so essential, yet often overlooked. Common issues, common problems.

If you don’t pay attention to the small stuff, the essential singing know-how tools, vocal problems can haunt you, and in the long run, are more difficult to undo.

Join me for an enjoyable, thorough excavation of all the VT basics through repertoire of your choice.

Furthering the Learning Curve

This workshop day will take place at Church Farmhouse in Winsham, just a short walk from The Jubilee Hall.

Saturday, 13th September 2025 10:30 AM – 5:00 PM BST
Church Farmhouse,
Winsham, Somerset
Application Deadline for singers:
1st August 2025
Maximum of 5 singers

Observers are warmly invited to join us. It's a wonderful opportunity to learn through listening and reflection.

Time to clear the cobwebs and reconnect with your voice.

The Vocal Refresh is a focused, supportive study day to help you reawaken your technique, reset your breath and posture, and ease into the new singing term with clarity, calm, and a little creative spark. We’ll work through core aspects of vocal technique using repertoire you bring along —especially helpful if you're planning to join The Singer’s Journey on Sunday. This is a chance to get grounded, get curious, and begin again with purpose and confidence.

The Music

Please bring pieces you’re currently working on or would like to revisit. These can be familiar favourites or new selections you’re exploring. The focus will be on using these pieces to delve into vocal technique, so choose works that offer opportunities for technical exploration.

If you’re feeling unsure about what to bring—or even whether you’re “ready”—please don’t worry. This is a welcoming, low-pressure space where we meet you just as you are. The aim is to support your vocal journey, not to test it. Whether you bring a well-loved piece or something you’re only just starting to explore, it’s all part of the process. You’ll be in good company, and there’s no need to be perfect—just willing.

A note from Sue, a recent workshop participant:

"I approached the workshop with some trepidation—reticent to sing in French and full of doubts. Had I chosen the right songs? Did I know them well enough? What would my pronunciation sound like? Would I be a complete nervous wreck?

I had nothing to fear. The whole weekend I was surrounded by Gillian and supportive fellow singers. Her guidance was highly professional, always personal, and beautifully tailored to each singer.

Maybe you’re reading this with your own misgivings—about language, technique, repertoire, nerves, age—so many things can make us reluctant to sing. But whatever the reason, you’ll find these weekends welcoming and worthwhile, with Gillian as the perfect guide."

A maximum of 5 singers will have the opportunity to enjoy a full day, with lunch in between, singing, listening and discussing all things vocal technique. Bring a packed lunch to keep you going—tea, coffee, and a few gentle refreshments will be provided.

Make a weekend of it.

Why not begin with The Vocal Refresh on Saturday to reconnect with core technique, then follow through with The Singer’s Journey on Sunday—a chance to reflect on your progress, explore repertoire, and set thoughtful goals for the year ahead. Each day stands on its own, but together they offer a rich and rounded start to the new singing term.

Important Note:
Applications for the September workshops close on 1st August, which gives us all the gift of time. With summer holidays often claiming the calendar, applying early means you’ll have space to prepare well, receive thoughtful guidance from me in advance, and arrive at the weekend feeling relaxed, ready, and supported. It’s never too soon to say yes to something that will lift your singing spirit.

See you inside ...

Once you've signed up/opted in for the workshop day, I'll be in touch with you personally, to gather your thoughts and give you the logistical details. It will be a day where we collaborate to create a day that serves us as singers in a positive, supportive way.

"It's essential to work on something you're deeply interested in. Interest will drive you to work harder than mere diligence ever could. The three most powerful motives are curiosity, delight, and the desire to do something impressive. Sometimes they converge, and that combination is the most powerful of all."
