Voice-works Spring Study Weekend

25-26 January 2025

Closing date for applications please: Saturday 7th December

Join me for an exciting journey.

Origins: Opera, Oratorio and Song.

Two-Day Study Event for Classical Singers

I’m pleased to invite you to join me at The Jubilee Hall in Winsham, Somerset—a venue with great acoustics and history, built in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee. It’s an ideal setting to explore your repertoire and enjoy the experience.

This event is open to classical solo singers, focusing on music from the Baroque, Classical, and early Romantic periods (1600–1850). You’ll choose three pieces—one from opera, one from oratorio, and one song—each from a different period. Whether you prefer Purcell, Handel, Mozart, or Schubert, you’ll enjoy the freedom to explore music that reflects the evolution of these genres.

Are you looking for more facts & inspiration?

From the medieval songs of troubadours and lute songs of the Renaissance to the grandeur of Baroque opera and oratorio, the history of song is one of continual innovation and emotional depth. Click HERE for a page dedicated to giving you further insight ...

We’ll start each day with vocal warm-ups, followed by Masterclass-style sessions with practical feedback on your chosen repertoire. The weekend finishes with an informal performance, where you can share what you’ve worked on in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

If you’re not ready to perform, you can attend as an observer. It’s a great way to learn and build confidence without the pressure of singing yourself.

Your repertoire should be musically secure but not necessarily polished. This weekend is all about exploring, learning, and finding balance in your performance. I’ll be on hand throughout the weekend to offer guidance and support.

Here’s what participants from the Autumn Study Weekend 2024 had to say:

"I’ve realised this weekend just how much I’ve refined my process. Even when a song feels tricky or unfamiliar, I’ve learned not to be put off. It’s about finding those little breakthroughs, like when you finally hear the note you’ve been missing.”

"I’ve really grown into these songs. They weren’t chosen particularly in a logical way, but as I’ve worked on them, I’ve developed a real connection, especially with My Life’s Delight.”

"Gillian has given us a breadcrumb trail between what happens when we meet in a hall with her coaching, where things emerge from us that we can’t replicate at home, and the stuckness we sometimes feel practicing alone"

If you’re thinking about joining, now’s the time to secure your place. There are only 5 spots for singers, and unlimited space for observers. The application deadline is December 6th 2024 so make sure you don’t miss out. If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch—I’m happy to help!

Looking forward to sharing this musical journey with you!

Repertoire Selection Guidance: While our timeline offers a framework, the repertoire is entirely your choice. The musical journey will be yours to curate.
