Sing Joyfully 2024

9th -10th  November

Sing Joyfully 2024 - Join Us!

the quintessential workshop weekend for ensemble singing and well-being.

9th-10th November

If you are a singer searching for fun and immersive vocal experiences with built-in professional vocal guidance, I warmly invite you to join me for the "Sing Joyfully!" weekend. This enriching two-day event is dedicated to ensemble singing and is designed to serve singers of all levels who are eager to learn, share, and celebrate the joy of music.

Who It's For

Whether you're an experienced vocalist or a relative novice, this workshop welcomes you. If you want to enhance your vocal skills in a supportive and enjoyable setting, "Sing Joyfully!" will be perfect. The event provides an opportunity to sing in small groups or with one voice per part, offering a unique challenge for those interested in pushing their limits.

What to Expect

Theme and Activities:
The weekend theme is promoting a sense of well-being, and having fun in good company through small group ensemble singing. The music selection will be varied and bespoke, tailored to cater to the participants.

  • This immersive experience includes professional vocal guidance, with a focus on the following:
  • Basic principles of good vocal technique, accompanied by useful warm-ups.
  • Exploration of different ensemble types and scenarios/settings.
  • Preparation for a final performance each day.

Day One: a special fundraising event, with lunch!

Day one of the workshops will focus on larger group singing and will also be a fundraiser for Worldwide Cancer Research. The organization funds innovative and impactful cancer research projects around the globe, aiming to find better treatments and cures for all types of cancer. By supporting scientists at the forefront of cancer research, they are dedicated to discovering new ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer, ultimately striving to save lives and improve the quality of life for those affected by this disease.

This day's singing will hold a deeper meaning as we dedicate it in memory of someone special to many of us — a beloved figure in our singing past. His ready wit during rehearsals and unwavering support of all things musical still bring a smile to my face, and I can picture him at the back of Class Apart, grinning at me as I conducted. He is much missed, and I know how much he would have loved the idea of us coming together to sing, especially when it’s for such a meaningful cause. A dedicated Just Giving page will be created by mid-October, and I'll link to it here.

In aid of Worldwide Cancer Research

Day One will be perfect for those who love the energy and harmony of singing with a larger group (but not too large, max for the room is 25) of people. We will explore favourite and much-loved easy-to-access music that best serves the group for fun and fulfilment.

A wholesome and healthy lunch and refreshments will be provided as part of creating a welcoming and nourishing experience. I want to ensure that both your body and voice are well cared for as you immerse yourself in a full day of joyful singing.

  • Focus: Larger group singing. The maximum number is set at 25. Participation Fee: £85 with a percentage of monies being donated to  Worldwide Cancer Research.  Applications are open until 19th October.  If you're unable to attend but would still like to support the cause, there will be a donation link available before 19th October.
  • Activities: Engage with a broad ensemble, perfect for those who love the energy and harmony of singing with a larger number of participants.
  • Venue: The Ritchie Hall, Chandler's Ford, Hampshire, UK
  • Time: 10:30 - 17:30.
  • Facilities: Light intimate space with parking, kitchen facilities, and toilets available on-site.

Day Two: with a little more direction

  • Focus: Duets, trios, and quartets. Participation Fee: £130  Applications invited before 5th October.
  • Activities: Experience the intimacy and precision of smaller group study and staged/directed mini-performances, ideal for those who enjoy more challenging, focused and intricate singing experiences.
  • Venue: In the locality, to be confirmed, depending on numbers.
  • Time: 10:30 - 17:30.

Preparation

Participating singers are encouraged to prepare some music in advance, and help will be given if requested.

Here's what others have to say ...

Sue Lewey

"Sing Joyfully is a wonderful experience. For me, it built a bridge between large choir singing and smaller ensemble singing. I thought I could not act, let alone sing and act! But - I found out I can, and I am looking forward to doing it all again!"

Sophie Bierens de Haan

"Each of Gillian’s singing events has been an unparalleled experience for me, both from a learning perspective and in sharing the joy with others."
